We are a group of licensed massage therapists and acupuncturist specializing in Neuromuscular Therapy, here to help patients with neck, jaw and back pain. We are trained to specifically handle headaches, migraines and other neuromuscular pain with medical massage, cold laser therapy and kinesiology taping.
Studies have shown that many migraines and headaches can be related to myofascial restriction in the shoulders, neck and upper back. Most people suffer from some sort of myofascial restriction, which can be caused by inflammation, repetitive overuse, trauma, surgery or other factors. Neuromuscular massage treatments can be used to correct myofascial restriction and reduce the pain from headaches and migraines.
Neuromuscular Therapy aims to correct five main elements of pain:
- Ischemia – Blood supply to the tissues is restricted, which inhibits the flow of oxygen to the muscles.
- Trigger Points – Highly irritated areas of muscle can cause referred pain in other areas of the body.
- Postural Distortions – An imbalance of the muscular system caused by moving the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes. Longtime poor posture habits are the most common cause of pain from this element.
- Nerve Entrapment/Compression – Pressure on the nerves by bone, soft tissue or cartilage.
- Biochemical Dysfunction – An imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in a faulty movement pattern, such as poor lifting habits, computer keyboarding or bad body mechanics.
At Neuromuscular Solutions, we strive to assist your body in the healing process through massage and related techniques. Our specific treatment model is different from what you might get at a spa or chiropractic office, as we have different approaches to the length of treatment sessions, defining targeted areas and types of treatment. We utilize a variety of different methods to achieve our goal, including vast array of massage techniques as well as cold laser therapy, KT Tape and essential oils.
Each session is tailored to your specific needs and individual goals. The session will begin with a subjective review of your symptoms, defining a treatment plan in conjunction with the doctor’s recommendations, and a goal which we would like to reach.
In order for the body to heal, we must keep in mind that the muscles have developed into the condition they are in over a course of time. Therefore, it will take time to alleviate and treat the symptoms associated with myofascial restriction. With each consecutive treatment of medical massage, cold laser or any other treatment provided by Neuromuscular Solutions, we help your body further along the healing process. It it crucial to stay consistent with your treatment, so that we have the ability to recognize factors that may be contributing to your discomfort and can achieve lasting effects and optimal results.
Please note that medical massage is not a substitute for medical attention. A patient should not receive medical message if not cleared by and/or prescribed by a medical doctor, or if the patient has sustained any type of recent injury. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us in person, by e-mail or by phone.
At Neuromuscular Solutions we also have acupuncture. This arm of our practice is led by Xenia Maradiaga-Gross Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist with a Masters of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. NCCAOM certified.
Acupuncture uses specific points to aid the body’s energy or Qi flow easily, allowing harmony and health to be restored when it has been out of balance due to stress, pain, tension, trauma etc.
Often, we start to notice these imbalances being expressed as symptoms in the body, mind and emotions. Acupuncture can help with acute, chronic or recurring problems ranging from jaw, neck, back, and shoulder pain to migraines, headaches, PMS and stress.
Not only can you experience relief from physical systems but you also may experience a better sense of wellbeing and emotional balance improving your quality of life. This is our main mission.
We also support our patients with lifestyle, diet and nutritional guidance.
What you can expect
Each acupuncturist has a unique style often blending techniques that may come from an eastern or western approach to medicine. To determine a customized treatment for you your practitioner may ask you about your symptoms, behaviors and lifestyle. They will examine:
- Parts of body that are painful
- The shape and color of your tongue
- The color of your face
- The strength, rhythm and quality of your pulse in your wrist
Your initial evaluation will take an hour and half and follow ups will take an hour. How often you want to follow up will depend on how acute or chronic your condition is.
During acupuncture session
Points can be selected in all areas of the body and sometimes points will be selected far removed from area of pain or concern. Your acupuncturist will guide you about planned treatment and if you need to remove any clothing. You will be provided with a cover or sheet to preserve your modesty. You lie on a massage table for the treatment
Needles are very thin usually causing very little discomfort. You leave them in for at least 20-25 minutes while you relax or fall asleep. There is usually no discomfort when needles are removed. After session some people feel relaxed and other energized but not everyone responds the same since we are all unique.
